Vegan Parents Lose Their Baby

An Italian vegan couple lost custody of their baby. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“A 14-month-old Italian baby, who was reportedly fed a vegan diet, has been removed from his parents after arriving at a Milan hospital seriously malnourished.

The baby, whose name has not been released, was taken to hospital by his grandparents a week ago and doctors were shocked to see the poor state of the baby's health and a body weight only just slightly higher than a newborn.

Blood tests revealed the child, who was born in May 2015, was severely malnourished with calcium levels barely adequate to survive. The baby was also suffering from a congenital heart condition which required emergency surgery. He is now recovering in hospital.

"This forces us to reflect on uncommon feeding regimes, even if in this case it was complicated by a cardiac malformation," said Luca Bernardo, director of paediatrics at the hospital that took him in.”

Not a vegan myself, but parents who are responsible will make sure that
their infant’s nutritional needs are satisfied regardless of their died.
Many families responsibly raise their family’s off of vegan diets without
any serious health consequences for their children. Whenever a child dies
under these circumstances there is almost always some form of neglect at
play that goes beyond just the surface details that get sensationalized.

+「Evil」 I agree completely. Even if you are a vegan your child’s health
      should always come first.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately
planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are
healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the
prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets
are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle,
including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and
for athletes. A vegetarian diet is defined as one that does not include
meat (including fowl) or seafood, or products containing those foods.

      Vitamin B12
      Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
      Docosahexaenoic acid

yes some of these you can get from plants but risk being deficient and some
of these you can only get from meat

even stranger is that non-Heme-Iron (the one found in plants) is not
absorbed as well as Heme-Iron (the one found in meat)

and then there is this thing called the “meat factor”, consuming Heme-Iron
from meats improves the absorption of non-heme-iron which is found in

hhhhmmm….. is there a symbiosis between meat and plant eating? who knows,
but one thing we do know is that your statement “There’s no nutrient in
meat that you can’t get from plants” is false, Creatine is one but im
assuming this is the part where you’ll explain that muscles are useless and
not necessary. Carnosine is another. D2 you can get from plants but D3 is
only found in animals and is much more potent then D2. DHA you can get from
Microalgae but the point is that we evolved eating meat and absorbing DHA
      from meat, not algae…

Eating a vegan diet can be perfectly healthy but if done incorrectly can be
severely damaging. These parents are in the wrong not because they decided
to feed the child a vegan diet but because they were careless and did not
make sure that the child had proper nutrition. The heart condition could
have something to do with it but that only means they should have been that
much more watchful over their child’s health.

    • Atom Chapman
      July 17, 2016 at 6:30 PM

You’re absolutely correct! Also, let it be known that ANY diet that is

+Spiritual Science Jason Dotson im sorry, but for my entire career and
education as a biologist, there is absolutely nothing that supports your
claim, humans do not have the microbes to metabolize cellulose “plant
material” however, if we were to inoculate a person with herbivorous
microbes, the human would die from extreme diarrhea. humans are omnivores,
meat is part of the diet. is it morally wrong, in this day and age…sure.
but is that how humans physiologically work, absolutely, please dont spread
this cancerous information to innocent bystanders. i didnt give 12-13 years
of my life to let pseudoscience like this run rampant by people who read
“health blogs” and such. i dont mean to offend, but it just struck a bad
